peeperoonie@gmail.comRight, what to say about myself?
Age: 26 *sobs*
Height: Just under 5'
Eyes: Blue-grey
Hair: Medium brown, lower-back length
Likes: Sweet things (waaaay too much!), anime, sci fi and fantasy, music, drawing, reading
Dislikes: Buzzy stinging insects, cheese, bad fanfiction, OOC-ism, canon-rape, Mary Sues, Netspeak
Warnings: Sarcastic when ticked off, excessive whinging when depressed, constant yammering when obsessed
I've been online since around 1997, hovering around the edges of many fandoms. I didn't actually chat to anyone online until I got into Stargate SG-1, joined the SGC site and picked my first screen-name: Athene. I used several other there: Minerva, Menolly, Mithrandir, Opal Phyre, Killashandra, Luthien Tinuviel, Talytha...but I was always best known a General/Base Commander Athene (MALPs are your friends!).
When I got into Stargate SG-1 I started reading my first fanfiction as a way of getting more of my favourite show, since we were always behind in the UK, and have since become quite addicted to it. I've always loved to read, especially sci fi and fantasy, so being able to get more of my favourite shows and more of my favourite characters through fanfiction was a dream come true. However, I think I was rather spoiled by my time reading SG-1 fanfiction, since at the time very few Mary-Sues turned up and I could quite easily avoid the outright slash and ‘shipper fics that appeared. I dislike fanfiction that strays too far from canon intensely - that means things like AUs were the only thing recognisable about the characters are thier names. It smacks of arrogance on the writer's part, thinking that they know better than the creator of the series. Plus if you're a fan of something, why go out of your way to change it beyond all recognition? The over-reliance of writers on romance in fanfiction to drive their 'plot' frustrates me because I read fanfiction to see a little more of my favourite series, not that series on love potion #9...which is how the characters end up in the hands of all but the more skilled fan-authors. </rant> That said I do like to see canon-romance developed, but only if the characters are true to themselves and there's a hint of some kind of plot beyond the romance. Sappy one-shots are an exception though *L*
After getting into Star Wars in 2000 (after many years of refusing to have anything to do with the movies) I adapted my SG-11 screen-name 'Talytha' and made it 'Talythia Starseeker', which I used to chat at a dual-Star Wars and Star Trek-themed chat community called Outpost 10F. There, my knowledge of Red Dwarf and various other sci-fi series soon landed me a position in the site's Trivia Team in the Entertainment Network department, where I Hosted weekly trivia nights - running those was the most fun I ever had online and I miss those days greatly.
Like with Stargatesg-1.com, I also had a few alternate screen names that I used there: Q'ylzan Shar, Nyeray Dorass, Shrier Thal, Ziggy, Chadow, Peeperoonie - but most people (especially Higher-ups with detailed personnel list access) knew exactly who I was anyway and just called me Taly.
I've since semi-retired from the site, after stints as Team Leader of the Trivia Team and Senior Manager of the Entertainment Network. This was partly due to my discovery of anime in 2002, after catching an episode of Neon Genesis Evangelion on the Sci Fi channel - fandom-wise, I haven't really looked back. Suddenly all my bandwidth went towards trying to prise fan-subbed episodes out of Kazaa, and downloading Japanese anime and game OST tracks.
My interests list is basically a list of every fandom I've ever looked at online, so there's no point in me listing what I've watched and read here.
Since getting my own LiveJournal in 2003, I've become more involved in the fandoms I like, though mainly to review and criticise fanfiction. More recently I have been making icons/avatars and sprites, since it allows me to be creative and contribute someone without inflicting my awful hand-drawn 'art' on a fandom - much as I love to (try to) draw, my 'skills' have much to be desired (which a quick glance at my Elfwood and Fan Quarter galleries can tell you). And though I read fanfiction by the tonne (when I can find stuff worth reading), I can't write it to save my life. Plots just don't spring to my mind, unfortunately.
My current screen name is Peeperoonie, though I still use Talythia Starseeker in places I joined before I adopted 'Peeperoonie' as my primary screen name, or if I'm feeling serious. I tend to be a lot less sarcastic online than in real life, since sarcasm doesn't often come off well online, and I prefer to keep a 'don't rock the boat' policy and try not to tick off too many people online. That won't stop me from giving as good as I get if flamed though. I do have a temper, even if my keyboard usually keeps it in check online.
My current pet peeves include people saying England and English, when they actually mean Britain and British (c'mon Yanks, even you must know that there's more to this island than England!) and people not being able to spell my screen name correctly despite it being right on the screen in front of them - if in doubt, or you're all pinkies and thumbs when it comes to typing, copy and paste my name. Just wait until I find my Peperami pics again...
Top of the currant obsessions pile at the moment is an anime called Slayers - I can honestly say I've got it worse for this series than I have had for any other so far. DVDs? Got 'em. Soundtracks? Working on getting the rest. Manga? Novels? Other merchandise? Oooh yes please...must have more! The fanfiction is mostly depressingly anti-canon, which is like fingernails dragging across the black-board of my canon-loving soul. I'm an adamant Lina/Gourry (or Gourrina, but that sounds like a disease >_<) supporter and a Gourry-devotee, with all the determination to flame to cinders anyone who insults or mocks the pairing or the characters that go with it. Yes, I'm probably a bit rabid about it. Yeah, I should probably be more...accepting of non-canon stuff. I don't want to be seen as a canon-nazi. But hell, there's experimenting with the canon, and then there's slashing and burning it in the night, y'know? Alt-fans seem to outnumber the TRADs still, so we just have to SHOUT A BITTY LOUDER! Yeah!
More recent favourites include Chrno Crusade, One Piece and Bleach, with the long-term on-and-off interest Naruto. Yeah, I have a thing for shounen series- shoujo mostly doesn't really do anything for me.
Much of my time currently is spent either catching up with anime and manga or playing World of Warcraft - I resisted for a long time, but my friends finally sucked me into it in February 2006, and I've been playing ever since. I mostly play on the EU realm The Venture Co as part of the guild Crescent Moon and can be found under the names Talythia, Rahxephonia, Eidolone and Gallifreya.
